We have different aspects of ourselves. The infant self is pre personal. It does not have a fully formed sense of identity. If all goes well over time we evolve and develop a stronger sense of who we are. We develop a sense of personal identity. As that personal self becomes more defined we begin to identify completely with it and come to believe that this personal self is all of who we are. But with practice we can come to realize that the self we believed was all of who we are is just a fleeting aspect of our true nature. Just a ripple on the vast ocean of our transpersonal identity.
